IEC has established a new conformity assessment system for certification to standards relating to equipment for use in renewable energy applications. The objective of IECRE (IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications) System is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in Renewable Energy Sectors while maintaining the required level of safety. The IECRE system  includes  Wind Energy (WE) Sector, Solar PV Energy Sector , and  Marine Energy (ME)  Sector. The IECRE System ( yet to be operational) will offer a broad mix of certification services for the equipment and product suppliers, project developers, service providers including laboratory and field testing facilities, end users, regulators, and  financers relevant to these RE sectors. The IECRE will have close liaison with the respective IEC standard committees, such as, IEC TC 88, IEC TC 82, and IEC TC 114, through the following Operational Management Committees (OMCs): WE-OMC, PV-OMC, and ME-OMC. These OMCs  report  to the IECRE Management Committee, called REMC.

Canada has joined the IECRE in 2014 through its member body – CANC/IEC. A Canadian Mirror Committee for IECRE has been established.
